Hi Folks:
First of all, I would like to thank everybody that has congratulated me on my Calgary Marathon time of 3:50:27 – another Boston Marathon qualifying time.
Based on my pace during my training sessions I was targeting a time a around 3:35 in my six in 60 journey. However, this wasn’t the case. The stomach flu from the week before came back to haunt me. During my warm up I felt stomach discomfort.
I started into the race with the strategy of maintaining a heart rate of 165 with the idea of picking it up to 175 on the why back from Bowness Park. The way it turned out is that my stomach continued to feel worst and at the 30 km mark sipping on water and taking a gel made things feel worse. The last hour was one of taking walk breaks and determination to cross the finish line. Two things kept my going – My family and friends waiting for me at the finish line and the fact I didn’t want to register for another running marathon to complete my six in 60.
When I crossed the finish it was great relief to see my family holding a sign showing the completion of four marathons and two more to go with the phrase “Go Great Grandpa Go”.
With number 4 behind, I will commence training in a few days for the Treherne Marathon Manitoba in mid Sept. I will provide an update a few days before.
